  • Shillong Visually Impaired Inspiring Story?

Inspiring Story: Overcoming Challenges in Skill Development for the Visually Impaired

We’d like to celebrate Mr. Kamdathmu Langstang, a Trustee at the Blind Lead Trust (BLT), who’s nearly finished his soap-making training at Colks Company under the Meghalaya State Skills Development Society (MSSDS) in Laitumkhrah!

Mr. Langstang, himself visually impaired, shares the challenges he faced:

    • Inaccessible materials: Some tools, like thermometers for measuring heat, require sighted assistance to interpret readings.
    • Difficulty with notes: Braille is great, but writing it can be physically demanding.

Despite these hurdles, Mr. Langstang’s teacher and friends provided incredible support, explaining processes and making things understandable.

This story highlights a broader challenge: Many in Shillong and Meghalaya lack experience working with visually impaired individuals.

Here’s how we can all be more inclusive:

    • Clear communication: Avoid phrases like “look into this.”
    • Tactile learning: Let visually impaired people touch materials whenever possible to enhance their understanding.
    • Accessible notes: Provide training materials in accessible formats like PDFs (created in Word/Docs) instead of photos or scans.

    Technology can help:

    • Text-to-speech apps can convert documents and photos for free.
    • The government could consider providing these tools to those in need.

The Blind Lead Trust’s vision: After Mr. Langstang’s training, the Trust will identify accessibility barriers and develop solutions for easier participation by the visually impaired.

BLT believes: Together, we can solve problems through collaboration.

Our goal: When the blind lead the blind, they can choose their own paths.

Please share and help raise awareness!

  • donate for the training course to the Visually Impaired Students?

    Hy fokes: šŸ˜‡šŸ¤”šŸ˜Ÿ

We would like to announce that to you the Blind Lead Trust (BLT) non-profit organization in these previous years it was really hard to contribute for the welfare of the people with disabilities. Maybe society also witnesses it . We have tried our level best for the community of the PWDs. of course, it is not a big deal. Hence, at list we got to solve those people who are in need on time. šŸ«°šŸ¼šŸ‘šŸ“¢

There are more than 10 young people who have employees in our organization and more than 80 beneficiaries from it. We are so happy to see the collaboration between the sighted and the people with disabilities to learn from each other. It is important for common sense to understand each other. šŸ‘

But right now we are in a very difficult situation due to the lack of financial support. šŸ˜ actually there is a lot which we still need to do for the betterment of the people with disabilities in the state of Meghalaya or across the country in particular to promote the society of our community. Even though our friends who are PWDs have lost their jobs from our organization and they are very sad to see this is happening to us. Because they see their hope in this organization and they spend a lot of their hard work! But right now it is happening like this. šŸ‘©šŸ¼ā€šŸ¤ā€šŸ‘©šŸ¾ so, we want to sustainable our organization so that to take back the trust by our friends of  people with disability. We really want to bring development and employment to them. šŸ™šŸ¼šŸ™‹šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Therefore friends, if it is possible we from the organization would like to request your attention or collaboration and guidance/advice on how we can grow up for our future. If you do, it will be so blessing to all of the people with disabilities (Visually Impaired). Maybe we could not pay your greate hard and work hard. But just imagine that if you help us the god will multiply your doing good things to those who need you. So, please donā€™t hesitate to join your helping hands. Even a small thing will be so mean to us.

As of now, the board  has taken the decision that we will send each member to different training courses so that we can produce production after we have completed each training course in the upcoming months or years. For instance, one trustee we will send to the food processing and another trustee we will send to the Soap making and the 3rd one will be to the craft making. And there is one member who will go for the computer training course so that the organization will start the center here in Shillong for the visually impaired or some other types of people with disabilities students after she completes it.

Therefore citizens, we need your support and helping hands so that we can complete our missions so we will have a better living in the future. We are begging you to please help us as well as you can. It could be sharing this, it could be reposting, it could be discussing it with your friends. So, if you could help us with the donation to our organization, it would be so amazing that we can proceed to our training course as mentioned above. Right now we are having very little amount in our organization. We donā€™t know if we can still proceed with the training of our organization goals. Please donā€™t let us down! šŸ˜‰šŸ„¹

  • the SBI Shillong (Malki Branch) refuce the thump impression of the Visually Impaired.

    Dearest connection;

We are a blind organization which is based in the Shillong city state of Meghalaya in the northeast of india. We are very sad to announce that to you most of the people towards here are not able to understand the capability of the blind people. They always thought that the blind people cannot do anything in this world. So, if we need anything they used to ask someone who can see to witness on behalf of us.

You cannot imagine that even though the people which you think and see are very powerful people. But they donā€™t know anything about the rights of the persons with disability. For instance, we have the problem with the State Bank of India which is in Shillong city itself only and it is very high ranking (Malki Branch). But they are refused the thumb impression which is the signature of the blind people and they cannot do their signature with the Pen  because they are visually impaired. That is the corporate account which is the bank account of our organization. We want to change the signatory of our bank account of our organization and all the trustees who are visually impaired. Because one of our trustees who was sighted died and then we have to change the signatory in the bank. We have brought the resolution which has been passed by the board of trustees. But the trustees did the signature with the thumb impression so the bank has refused it. I donā€™t know if this is appropriate for the bank to do that with their customers, Especially with the people with disabilities. This is not just because our orgself anization has faced it even though the individuals are also faced with so many times in different schedules branches of the banks. There are only kind people who will understand and stand for the rights of the blind people to protect all of the rights of the persons with disabilities as well.

Actually we need to fix this issue so that all of the persons with disabilities will not face any challenges in the future with the same issue. But we need great lawyers to deal with it. In Shillong itself, we do not find the right lawyer who can help us.

Is there anyone who can advise me on this?

    Please text or call me.

  • Shillong Computer Training for the Visually Impaired Students?

The National Institute of Technology of Shillong Meghalaya:

They inaugurated the training center for the blind people in Shillong. So, I think this is the first and best institute in the entire north east of India where the blind people can pursue their computer training so that they will be able to get placement in any kind of position. Even though it is available to those people who are deaf and blind, they cannot see and cannot hear. But in this institute they provide them with the Braille keyboard where they can recognize the keys by reading with the braille alphabet. This has never been done before!

So, please pay attention and get ready for anyone who has childrens who are people with disabilities. Right now it is under the process of setting up for the syllabus and it will get ready by the month of july. We hope by that month the course will be able to start.

  • Computer Training Course & for the blind people of Shillong?

Today we visited the NIT of Shillong, Meghalaya to finalice the system and computer lap to set up the training course for the visually impaired students/PWDs of our state and the north east of india.

    Just to remind everyone:

The blind Lead has taken the initiative to request the national institute of technology of Shillong to provide the opportunity even for the blind people to study in their institute since there is no other university or institute who can provide them for the computer training course. Except that the Enable India organization collaborates with the Bethany Society which is only one institute. Actually, even across the north east there are very few institutes or universities for the blind people related to the courching center like the other people did. Hence, there is also another center which is called, composite regional center which is coming from the center where people with disabilities can gain more benefit from it.

Therefore, right now there is another new option: training courses are available at an institute NIT of Shillong doing this for the blind people and other persons with disabilities to gain a lot of opportunities inside of this institute National Institute of Technology of Shillong Meghalaya. Which means, there are many options to the PWDs right now in the north east of india. So, now it depends on how they want to be in their lives. But we want to encourage each and every person with disabilities across the northeast to please take advantage of these opportunities for your livelihood and better living. If you do, you will have a great job for yourself. If you get a great job, then you will be independent in your lives. If you are independent, then you have your passions or visions. Be hard work so that you will lessen your own burdens.

You can apply directly to the institute NIT of Shillong or you can just apply through the Blind Lead Trust organization. We are collaborating. But everything is based or provided by the NIT institute of Shillong Meghalaya. This is the best institute in Shillong city. So, do not waste your time!

On behalf of the blind lead trust organization we would like to thank the Director and assistant professor and other staff of NIT Institute of Shillong. This is our dream come true, it is your encouragement and because of your consideration and hard work. We wish you the very best of your lives.

  • NECTAR of Shillong Facilitated Director of Blind Lead Trust Organization.

On the 10th of may 2024 the Blind Lead Trust (BLT) invited the NECTAR of shillong to the event in order to promote for the persons with disabilities from the state of Meghalaya.

On this day again we have showcased our organization prototypes in front of everyone which was founded by Late Dr. Theodore Moallem who is the cofounder of the Blind Lead along with Mr. Jitendra Dkhar currently Managing Director of the Blind Lead Trust Organization.

At the same time, on this day the NECTAR has been facilitated our director Mr. Jitendra Dkhar by the chief guest of this program the (technical engineering) National Institute of Technology of Shillong Meghalaya on behalf of our organization. So, we are feeling so encouraged  to see that now the people with disabilities are starting to be supported and recognized by the organization, institute and university in our state or the north east of india. But from our end are still the challenges related to making our organization sustainable due to the financial crisis, hence we will try from our level best to solve the society of persons with disabilities in the state or in the country in particular.

Therefore, on behalf of the Blind Lead Trust Organization we would like to thank the NECTAR of Shillong for their opportunity and encouragement to us. What you have done to our organization really means to us. At the same time, we really want and hope to seek more opportunities from now on for your collaboration. Please be there together with us! And if anyone wants to join hands together, the door is open for you. You can just apply through the website or you can come directly to us.

  • PWDs & Shillong, Election MPs Story & (contesting)?

I wanted to appeal to all of the candidates who are contesting for the Member of Parliament. Be it the Rajya Sabha or be it the Lok Sabha By this time.

As a visually impaired: I am feeling that I am forgotten behind the scenes. As the leader of the organization, I see that most of the powerful people feel shy even to talk to the blind people or other people with disabilities. According to my experience when I am trying to explain our problems to them it seems that they do not like to understand my problems. They thought that I am teaching them and they feel that they should be taught by this blind man instead to lessent carefully so that they can understand my problems very clearly. Some officers if the persons with disabilities come to their office and ask them something which they do not know and they want to know clearly about the schemes and certificates etc. but those officers are angry at them instead to make them understand it clearly or to provide them with the correct information. Why is this all happening? Because they are not working for the purpose of the welfare and development of the persons with disabilities or they might be not well trained themselves. At the same time, the government does not like to practice in the crowd, rather the documents are perfect. They love to see the perfect photos. They donā€™t care about the real work. But at least they have their attendance record and receive their salaries. This is what I was experience by my own practice and by some other people with disabilities. If we are going to complain to the authorities who are looking after us also, they are afraid to help us. They don’t even say anything whether we are mistaken or they donā€™t want to help us. But at least I have experience that they used to say that we couldnā€™t help you because you have no proof since you are the blind man. Sometimes, if I meet the officers who are not from our Khasiā€™s tribe, they try  to give their hands as per their level best without any doubt whether you are a christian or non christian. But at least they feel that if they can help even with one person they have contributed a lot in the society. I might like this system.

    Another problem:

For instance, if any blind people are going to take medicine to the doctors they do not know how to deal with them. This is me and my team we have already experienced and not just that there are a lot. Instead of asking us about how many Pills or drops and before eating or after eating, we should take the medicine. Hence, they treat and think of us like childish things we don’t know. But the problem is theirs. Because they donā€™t even try to talk with us. The doctors in Shillong Meghalaya most of them are very silent doctors. They do not follow the rights of patients. They are non accessibility environments doctors. They have no questions for their patients. They are not friendly doctors. At least for the people with disabilities. Especially in government hospitality, the people with disabilities have a lot of challenges. The doctors are irresponsible to the citizens. At the same time, it is very expensive for doctors or clinics in shillong meghalaya. One time, my blind friend went to the doctor in Civil Shillong and met the doctor there. So, the doctor asked him to open his mouth to check his throat and then he did. But the doctor, when he finished to check he didnā€™t tell my blind friend to close his mouth and he thought the doctor still needed to look into it for a long time. The doctor kept my blind friend like that until he was so tired. The doctor didnā€™t tell him to close his mouth. Another my friend blind girl she got one son and her son got the Thyroid treatment since were born and her husband also he is totally blind. So, the doctor didn’t explain to my friend blind girl about the treatment process of her son. Because she asked someone else to assist her in traveling by that time, the doctor explained everything to that person instead of her. Because the doctor thought of her she couldnā€™t do it. Even me I found that type of misbehavior by the doctors, officers, colleges, universities, and offices.

Hence, we donā€™t mean to condemn anyone because we understand that they donā€™t have time to know about our rights and maybe they donā€™t want to know about it. But if we can’t control it anymore, maybe we can make another decision for the future betterment of the people with disabilities communities. This is surely the discrimination against our rights.

The short stories of our blind friends above are only a small example. Otherwise, there are a lot in the villages also who knows. That is why the blind lead organization in Shillong is to protect the rights of the persons with disabilities.

If we are talking about the schemes to the persons with disabilities through the MPs I never heard it. What is the benefit we can get as persons with disabilities if we are going to take part in the election of MPs? According to me I donā€™t see any schemes till now and I never heard any issues our MPs discuss or talk about in the parliament. And what is that he was doing about us? I heard his focus was only with the religions. I donā€™t  see any manifestos from any political parties about the issues or what they want to do for the people with disabilities if they come to power or win their election. I donā€™t know whom I should vote for. I am very confused most of the time. There is no canvas for me, because they already count me with my family. They never talk to me even if they see me there. Sometimes, those candidates whom they know themselves will find it difficult to challenge those other candidates they used to find the minority voters which they think that no one will talk to this type of person. They used to talk or be friends with me. But the reality was they donā€™t like me. I have an experience with so many years the skills of the political candidates in our state. Some candidates don’t even want to talk. If they talk to us they feel that they are mistaken to talk with the wrong person and ashamed of themselves in front of other people. If I get a chance to meet and talk to them about my condition, they used to say that (yes yes) you are a special person. If I come or win in this election I will definitely do first for you. This is not just the political people used to play with the rights of persons with disabilities, even any other powerful people did the same things. But the most is the political people according to my experience.

There are so many people with disabilities who are struggling and hangry in their daily lives. But no one wants to sit and discuss to understand their issues and to find out their problems and to ask them what they need in their daily lives or to survive themselves. Ofcourse, we couldnā€™t forget there are some individuals who are helping once in a time, it doesnā€™t mean that we can survive in our daily lives. Livelihood is very important to each and every society or community. But we are the people with disabilities who are really in need. If we talk about employment , there are very few PWDs who can get the job. It might be that they and their family are connected with any power people, political people, religious leaders, or machinery organizations that have the chance to get jobs. But there is no proof I can provide to support that incident. Hence, I am sure there are other people also who know about that. Sometimes, I found that there are the people who are very controlling, they wouldnā€™t give a job even if the candidates are so toff because he or she is not from the same religion.

Most of my friends with disabilities in the state of Meghalaya are going to sell something or do a small business in the markets just to survive with their families. And also some of them who are going to the markets and be it as the beggars or any other such kind of activities even if it is can be a risk to their lives they have to over jump all of that for the survival of their children. Sometimes, society hates them just because of that. Hence, they have no choice, either my friends with disabilities don’t like to do that, but they have too. We the persons with disabilities also are getting married and want to contribute to society like other normal people only. Therefore, we do have a lot of issues which arrive in our daily lives as well.

This is everything. We are asking God to give us disabilities in our lives and also we donā€™t know why it is happening to us like this. But we need to survive as well as the other people did in this world. We have the same rights you cannot refuse. That is why, I explain these small issues so that the political people or candidates can think of their manifestos in their election contest. This is a small example, there are a lot where they can think of it. Ofcourse, the government has prepared for the accessible polling station and we are so glad of it. But if we are about our problems and benefits itā€™s really sad.

The accessibility of transportation is also very important to all of the persons with disabilities, without the accessibility the people with disabilities cannot move anywhere. Be it in various building offices, school, college, university, hospitality, religious building, portals websites, etc. Especially for transportation , it is very compulsory to do it first. Ofcourse, right now we can see the government has started to improve the accessibility of transportation after the demand from the Disabled Non Profit Organization which is based in Shillong itself. So, the blind lead trust also is a part of that demand and we are happy to see that they are starting to create awareness programs for drivers and conductors. We hope that this is the beginning and  process of many others’ works.

At the same time, I also want to advise that about the inclusive election campaign or canvas for the persons with disabilities so that they can also lessen or learn the manifestos that are appealing by the political parties and candidates. By doing that, it will help them to choose to whom they will vote for their rights. It is also important to involve the PWDs in the parties members so that they can learn the performance and tasks from those parties and the development or projects according to their ideologies as well as other people did their rights. Why not for the people with disabilities?

The government must also give a chance to the people with disabilities related to taking part in various sections like in the economy, business, etc. for instance they should get the opportunity to apply tenders from the government when there is any contract basis. I donā€™t know what it is called, but I hope you may catch my point by the way. At the same time, I would like to request the government to please give or make the schemes through the CSR funds for the PWDs NGOs. please make the policy related to this. Since the government talks about the collaboration and inclusive society they need to give a space or keys to this type of NGOs. because we also really want to bring development. But I donā€™t have proper information related to this. Hence, I do want that if the government can open the doors to us.

If we talk about the schemes where we can get through the MPs. I never heard it in the state of Meghalaya. The schemes might be there, but they donā€™t have the choice to do it. For instance, Incentive reward or award schemes for married disabled people and National Family assistance Scheme. I never see who can benefit from these schemes. If anyone has received it, you may please come forward. Through It, itā€™s encouraged to be an inclusive society for the welfare of everyone.

These are the points of my suggestion if it is possible. But I donā€™t know if it is fit or not. But I do want that to appeal my plans and choice. So, if anyone would like to go for further details we can collaborate.

Mr. Jitendra Dkhar Managing Director of Blind Lead Trust NGOs in Shillong Meghalaya.

  • request & collaboration/help for financial & sponsorship.

                                                     Website:  https://blindlead.org

Subject: prays & requests your collaboration/empowerment & help for the financial support.

    Respected madam/sir

This is the Blind Lead Trust (BLT) Non-Government Organization (NGO) which is based for the welfare of the people with disabilities in the state of Meghalaya and in the country in particular as well.

We have registered from the year of 2018 as the public trust under the act of 1882 and also under the act of the RPWD Act-2016.

The organization is humble to request you to find out the ways where the organization can get the financial support or sponsorship for the organization so that we can implement the current projects and for the future projects which are the basis for the welfare of the people with disabilities. Please help us, we know that you have full responsibilities for our citizens. Hence, if you can please be understandable especially to the persons with disabilities who are really in need. The organization really aims to empower and promote their society.

So, as per the year passed by we have contributed a lot to the society of the people with disabilities as the small organization  as well as we can. And there are so many things we still want to bring a lot of types of development, empowerment, and employment etc.

We have launched one project called ATM Talking Software for the visually impaired customers users which was sanctioned & supported financially by the state government and it was successful.  Through this project from now onwards all the visually impaired are able & easy to use the ATM Card like the other people did. We have submitted our findings & suggestions to the government & to the reserve bank of India through the state branch.

The organization has contributed to others people with disabilities who were really in need in the past by constructing the emergency house during the disinterested humorous coming to their lives. So now they are safe.

The organizations are also jointly demanding for accessible transportation for the betterment of all the citizens, people  with disabilities of the state & the country.

There are so many things the organization wants to do & bring others development for the future to deliver & to improve for the welfare of the society. Hence, this was where the organization had done as well as we could.

Therefore Maā€™am/sir, the organization would like to bring your attention to help us if it is possible related to how we can get the permanent financial support & sponsorship so that we can constitute the experts persons to help us to prepare & do the proper research if we are launching any issue/projects. Most of the time, even if we have a plan that we want to do/bring the ideas to create employment to the youth people with disabilities. But due to the financial problem we are unable to proceed ahead.

There are so many companies who earn a lot & do their business from or in the state. It might be that there are roles for them in charity like us. So, there will be more opportunities. We know that you know deepers details about it.

Maybe if you can open a new stage through it for the Blind Lead Trust as a non government organization which is based for the development of the people with disabilities organization.

There are two prototypes that we have in our organization which are based on the accessibility of education for the visually impaired students in order to make communication easier between the teacher and the VI students. Since we are focused on inclusive education, it is very important to work together related to new ideas to bring change. For instance, right now we do have the ideas & prototypes to help with better accessible education so that the blind people can have a great Blind Pen in school or college. But we do not have the opportunities.

We want to produce these prototypes but we donā€™t have enough infrastructure & engineering teams who are experts in this subject. Because we donā€™t have enough money to pay them.

We needed all of these like engineering, technical teams & materials so that we can monitor & estimate to proceed further needs.

At the same time, there is a long pending project which we really want to implement related to establishing a computer training course & coaching course center for the people with disabilities free of charge for those who are coming from poor backgram families and in the accessible ways of the persons with disabilities which can make them easy to access in our state. At present there is no center or opportunity like that for the people with disabilities. So, why not have at least one? So that it will be easy for the future generation.

    Yours faithfully and positive response.

    Managing Director. Mr. Jitendra Dkhar.

    Secretary. Ms. Bandwina Khymdeit.

    Trustee. Mr. Kanai Debnath.

Please note: the organization has every document right now, except the FCRA which is not eligible to apply for it according to the income tax rules.

  • Sensitization Program on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities Act-2016?

On the 5th of march 2024 the Muda Urban area Department of the state government of meghalaya in collaboration with the commissioner for  persons with disabilities conducted the awareness program related to the sensitization program on the rights of persons with disabilities act, 2016 relating to accessibility of transportation. The theme of this program was to guide bus drivers and conductors or taxi drivers in the shillong city.

The program was inaugurated by the chief guest shri. IW Angti (IAS) secretary of the MDA government and following the speech from the commissioner of persons with disabilities Smt. Sebrila B. Marak    and other important officers of the government.

As the program is gathered together on this day, drinking various drinks as we all understand is casual and the phrase means ” to open finding in the act of the rights of persons with disabilities. It is the platform that opened for the government to find out the various issues from different appeals between the People with disabilities NGOs and the bus drivers and conductors or taxi association that they can’t brief and submit together their problems. as we can see that on this day not every driver is coming to this program as a first time organized by the government. but the deputy commissioner for persons with disabilities said that they will follow them to find out why they are not participating in the program on this day. Hence, at least the drivers who have come to this program have learned a lot and they have addressed some issues that they are faced with in order to collaborate for the betterment of the people with disabilities and to be an inclusive society.

In this short program the government was intended to promote the welfare of the people with disabilities related to the accessibility of transportation and for their safety or better communication.

From the beginning the commissioner has been  addressing the issues of people with disabilities in Shillong. They still have difficulties in those areas where they have different types of problems  and face a lot of challenges in their daily lives in conveniences. so, they want to bring this program they need for the selves of a change in the awareness, the attitude they have towards the people with disabilities of the state. The commissioner said that the society should understand that the persons with disabilities are a part of the family only and which needs to be treated as well as the normal people like you treated your other childrens. She also talked about perception: like how you should look at the persons with disabilities and it helps you to be a self a change towards dealing with the people’s disabilities. at the same time, she also notice to the people in the program like how they can learn related on how to communication with the deft people through the sign language which they have develop one application named (Meghalaya signbank app).
